Krish Pinto’s first book is a stunning hybrid of memoir, how-to manual, and ongoing industry research written with unvarnished candor and uncompromising independence.
London, UK – June, 2025 – As the UK’s thriving film and television industry draws a new generation of aspirants, a new and unflinching voice is rising from its underground depths. In his first book, Becoming a Filmmaker: Making it in London’s Film Scene, writer Krish Pinto provides a candid, on-the-spot guide to artistic survival in one of the globe’s most cutthroat cities.
Substantially more than the standard memoir, Pinto’s book interweaves autobiography, cultural critique, and a developing analysis of the independent film sector. Based on experience and supported by informal research and interviews with influential players in the industry, Becoming a Filmmaker is already being described as a must-read for anybody trying to make a living in the UK’s creative economy without money, contacts, or formal advantage.
A Trench-Level Perspective on the Industry – No Glamour, No Delusions
Where other creative memoirs look back on triumphs long ago, Pinto writes from the dirty, middling middle. His is a story from the frontline of London’s creative sector from lugging kit through wet alleys to taking on unforeseen roles on disordered indie productions.
Every chapter strips away the truths of free labor, burnout, imposter syndrome, and the hustle it takes to get by as an outsider in a system that’s usually against you.
“This isn’t a highlight reel,” Pinto says. “It’s a field report from someone still in the field.”
More Than Film – A Toolkit for Creative Climbers
While film is the medium, Becoming a Filmmaker is for all DIY artists, freelancers, and self-taught creators attempting to find their way through volatile industries. It’s part survival manual, part mental health check-in, and part industry primer replete with tough truths and earthy wisdom derived from first-hand data and experience.
Whether it’s production work and rejection loops, burnout, or mentorship, Pinto offers strategies for maintaining a creative career on sheer determination alone.
For the Outsiders, Hustlers, and Late Bloomers
Born and raised in a conventional Christian household in Bombay, Pinto spent his childhood mesmerized by the on-screen universes of Goodfellas and Gangs of Wasseypur. His journey from India’s over-the-top cinema culture to London’s raw independent film scene is a unique cross-cultural point of view especially for immigrants, working-class artists, and anybody charting their own course in the arts.
“I wasn’t the best creative person in the room,” Pinto thinks back. “But I cared. And I started.”
Straightforward Industry Reality – Without the Jargon
Pinto has no use for the big picture silliness. He faces today’s fundamental creative industry contradictions: the increasing cost of production, the uncertainty of gig work, the commodification of artistic integrity, and the impending ethical dilemmas involving AI and automation.
But the book never abdicates to abstraction. Rather, Becoming a Filmmaker insists on staying rooted in narrative, feeling, and lived experience making it as accessible to working artists as it is authoritative for educators, cultural funders, and policy advocates.
